How to Use Modifier Variants for Customizable Meals

Modifier Variants are a powerful new feature that enables you to offer multiple customizable options under a single modifier. Whether it's portion sizes, ingredient types, or pricing tiers, this tool helps you provide a streamlined, flexible ordering experience for your customers while maintaining clarity at checkout.

This guide walks you through how to set up and manage modifier variants in your Admin Dashboard, and what your customers will see during the ordering process.

🔧 What Are Modifier Categories and Modifiers?

Category: A group of related modifiers. Think of this as the “type” of modifier (e.g., Protein, Veggies, Sides, Bread, etc.). Categories help organize your customization options.

Modifier: The specific options within a category. For example, under a Protein category, modifiers might include Chicken, Salmon, Beef, Pork, etc.

🛠️ Setting Up Modifiers in Admin

1. Creating a Category

Each category groups similar modifier options and defines selection rules for the customer.

Field Description
Category Name What your customers will see on the site/app (e.g., Choose Your Protein).
Category Internal Name Internal-only label for your reference.
Min. # Minimum number of modifiers a customer must choose.
Max. # Maximum number of modifiers a customer can choose.

2. Creating Modifiers Within a Category

Each modifier under a category can be uniquely priced and measured. Here's how to configure them:

Field Description
Modifier Name The name of the option (e.g., Chicken, Beef, Shrimp).
Price Price per one unit of measure (e.g., per oz, per slice). The system will scale this price automatically based on the customer's selection.
Cost Your internal cost per unit. Optional, but useful for cost analysis. If not applicable, leave it at $0.
Base Price Pricing based on HSA/FSA or tiered programs. Optional. Leave at $0 if not used.
Max Quantity The maximum times a customer can select the same modifier. Useful if your max # setting allows multiple selections.
UOM (Unit of Measure) How you define the portion (e.g., oz, slice, cup).
Increment Step size for selections (e.g., increments of 1: 1, 2, 3; or 2: 2, 4, 6).
Min Slider Value Minimum quantity a customer can choose. Must be equal to or greater than the increment and divisible by it.
Max Slider Value Maximum quantity allowed. Must also be divisible by the increment.

➕ Adding Nutritional Value Profiles

You can optionally add nutritional information for each modifier. This profile is automatically calculated based on the selected quantity.

⚠️ Important: Nutritional values must be based on 1 unit (e.g., per 1 oz), regardless of the increment or min/max slider values.

👀 Customer Experience

  • Once set up, customers will be able to:
  • Select from grouped categories (e.g., Choose Your Protein).
  • Use sliders or dropdowns to choose portion sizes.
  • View dynamic pricing updates as they adjust quantities.
  • See nutritional info (if provided), automatically scaled based on their selections.

✅ Best Practices

  • Use clear, descriptive names for categories and modifiers.
  • Keep pricing consistent with your menu and inventory costs.
  • Test your modifier flow before going live to ensure the customer experience is smooth.
