Product Tags: How to Create, Manage, and Use Tags for Your Menu

What Are Product Tags?

Product Tags are customizable labels you can assign to your products to help your customers quickly identify key attributes — such as dietary preferences, health conditions, or product highlights. Tags appear on your product cards and product detail pages and can be used as filters on your menu, making it easier for customers to find exactly what they're looking for.

Common examples of tags include: Vegan, Keto, Gluten-Free, Paleo, Low-Carb, High-Protein, Low-Sodium, Plant-Based, Heart-Healthy, and more.

Getting Started with Product Tags

Accessing the Tags & Filters Settings

  • Log in to your Admin dashboard.
  • Navigate to Product Settings.
  • Select the Tags & Filters tab.

If you haven't created any tags yet, you'll see a prompt to add your first tag, along with helpful information explaining how tags work.

Creating a New Tag

  • In the Tags & Filters section, click the + Add Tag button.
  • Fill in the following fields:
    • Tag Name (required) — The display name for your tag (e.g., "Keto"). Must be unique.
    • Tag Abbreviation (required) — A short-form version of the tag name. Must be unique.
  • Choose where you'd like this tag to appear by selecting one or more of the following options:
    • Show on Product Page — Displays the tag on individual product detail pages.
    • Show on Main Menu — Displays the tag on product cards within the menu view.
    • Use as Filter — Makes the tag available as a filter option so customers can narrow down menu results.
  • Click Save.

Tip: You can select any combination of display options — or none at all — depending on how you'd like the tag to be used.

Using Suggested Tags

To help you get started quickly, the system provides a set of suggested tags based on commonly used labels across the platform (e.g., Vegan, Keto, Gluten Free). Here's how to use them:

  • Add a single suggested tag — Click on a suggested tag to add it. A pre-filled modal will appear so you can review and customize the tag before saving. The tag will move from the Suggested list into your Product Tags list.
  • Add all suggested tags at once — Click the Add All Tags link. A confirmation modal will appear — select Confirm & Add Tags to add them all in one step.
  • Hide suggestions — If you prefer not to see the suggested tags list, click the Don't Show Suggestions link. You can bring it back later by clicking Show Tag Suggestions below the tags table.

Once all suggested tags have been added, the suggestions section will automatically disappear.

Editing a Tag

  • In the Product Tags table, find the tag you'd like to update and click Edit.
  • Update the Tag Name, Tag Abbreviation, or change the display options (Product Page, Main Menu, Use as Filter).
  • Click Save to apply your changes.

Note: Tag names and abbreviations must be unique — you cannot reuse a name or abbreviation that's already in use by another tag.

Deleting a Tag

  • Click Edit on the tag you'd like to remove.
  • In the edit modal, click Delete.
  • Confirm the deletion when prompted.

The tag will be removed from all products it was previously assigned to.

Assigning Tags to Products

Once your tags are created, you can assign them to individual products:

  • Navigate to Online Store > Products.
  • Select the product you'd like to tag.
  • Click Edit on the product.
  • Scroll to the Tags section.
  • Select the tags you'd like to apply from your existing tag library.
  • Click Save.

Tags assigned to a product will display on the product card and/or product detail page based on the display settings you configured when creating the tag.

How Tags Appear to Your Customers

Depending on your configuration, tags will appear in the following areas of your online store:

  • Product Cards (Menu Page) — Tags display as visual indicators on product images or below the product name, helping customers quickly scan for items that meet their preferences.
  • Product Detail Page (PDP) — Tags appear below the product images on the full product detail view.
  • Menu Filters — When a tag is set to "Use as Filter," customers can select it from the filter bar on the menu page to narrow results to only products with that tag.

Reseller-Level Tags

If you operate as a reseller, you can add your own tags at the reseller level in addition to any tags set by the parent organization:

  • Parent Tags — These come from the master product catalog and are read-only. You cannot edit, delete, or override them.
  • Reseller Tags — These are fully editable and managed by you. You can add and remove them freely, and changes apply only to your catalog — they will not affect other resellers or the parent organization's product records.

Both parent and reseller tags are combined and reflected in your customer-facing catalog and filtering experience.

Exporting Your Tags

To download a list of all your configured tags:

  • Go to Product Settings > Tags & Filters.
  • Click the Export CSV button.

This will generate a CSV file with all of your tags and their display settings for your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I assign multiple tags to a single product?
Yes! You can assign as many tags as you'd like to each product.
  • If a product has multiple tags, which one appears first on the menu?
The tag that appears first in your Custom Tags list (under Product Settings > Tags & Filters) will be the first one displayed on the menu. So if you'd like to prioritize a specific tag's visibility, make sure it's positioned at the top of your list. However, if you have the "New" and/or "Leaving Soon" tags enabled, these system tags will always appear on the first line before any of your Custom Tags. Custom Tags will then follow on the next line in the order they appear in your list.
  • What happens if I apply a tag that's already on a product?
Nothing — duplicate tags are automatically prevented. Re-applying an existing tag has no effect.
  • Will removing a tag from the tag library also remove it from my products?
Yes. Deleting a tag from your Tag & Filters settings will remove it from all associated products.
  • Can I use tags without showing them as filters?
Absolutely. When creating or editing a tag, simply leave the "Use as Filter" option unchecked. The tag will still appear on product pages and/or menu cards based on your other selections.
  • I added tags to my products, but they aren't showing on the menu. What should I do?
Make sure the tag's display settings are configured correctly — verify that Show on Main Menu and/or Use as Filter are enabled in Product Settings > Tags & Filters. If the issue persists, please contact our support team.
